Summary
In regular trading on Thursday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite tumbled 0.51% and 0.93%, respectively, extending their losing streak to a third day. Meanwhile, the Dow rose 0.2% to buck the trend, although it gave back most of its intraday gains. On the other hand, energy, industrial and financial stocks mostly advanced. The US economy expanded an annualized 2.8% in Q2, up from 1.4% in Q1, and above forecasts of 2%, the advance estimate showed. The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in the US fell by 10,000 to 235,000 on the period ending July 20th, below market expectations of 238,000.
VNINDEX closed at 1,233.19 (-5.28 points, -0.43%), liquidity dropped sharply below the 20-session average. The market had 131 green stocks and 294 red stocks. The group of stocks contributing to the market's increase included VIC BCM GVR, while CTG HVN and HPG contributed to the market's decline. Most industry groups showed recovery in the afternoon session. Foreign investors net sold about VND 491.92 billion.
